My Journey So Far
I’d like to share a bit about where I am. Before I do that, a bit of history. I’ve been performing magic pretty much my whole life. In 2004, I quit my “real” job as a computer programmer to go full-time into ministry through magic. I had the opportunity to partner with churches and other Christian organizations all across the country and around the world sharing the love of Jesus through magic and assorted silliness. Things were going well until the big economic downturn. It turns out that when money is tight, churches can find a way to get by without magic shows. Who knew!?
After a few years, I wasn’t in a good place financially, to say the least. So, I started doing some computer-related work for an apologetics ministry. Initially I did seasonal work, then contract, and eventually became an employee. It is nice to have regular, predictable income. Really nice. But it’s also extremely difficult to maintain two full-time jobs. It takes a great deal of work to keep any small business running, and ministry-focused magic is no exception. Performances and practices are just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. I tried doing it all for a while, resulting in little to no down-time and insufficient sleep. I was on my way to burning out. I’ve done that before, and had no intention of doing it again. So, I made the decision to let some of the work related to the magic business slide for a time.
I didn’t think it would be fair to the apologetics ministry for me to become an employee unless I was willing to commit to stay for a while. So I went in with the intention of staying on least two years. Well that brings us to today. It has now been well over a year since I became an employee. My debts are all paid off. (Well, except for my mortgage. I can’t be completely debt free. That’s just not the American way!) So, I’m looking at starting to move my focus back toward the magic ministry. In the weeks ahead, I’ll be starting to ramp my promotion, marketing, and social media work back up to where they need to be.
I’m looking forward to what lies ahead. As I prepare, I could use your help! I’m currently booking events for Christmas, and into next summer. If you know anyone who might be interested in hosting an event, please point them to my website or my page on Facebook. You also can help simply by interacting on social media. Likes and shares really do help.
